I was part of the team responsible for designing the Story feature, focusing on creating a seamless, low-pressure content format to drive more social engagement between friends, and played a key role in shaping the interaction flow of the story feed.

In the Story Feed, there are multiple avatars on the right side, which also serve as navigation. The comment section will be exposed directly to encourage more engagements.

Maintain consistency of the layout

Instagram’s Story format has a clear distinction from its main feed, helping users easily differentiate between the two. However, on TikTok, the main feed is already a full-screen content container, so we needed to consider how to better integrate the unique properties of Stories within the existing layout.

TikTok’s main interaction is vertical scrolling, so when designing the Story feed, we kept the same vertical flow to avoid introducing new interactions (like swiping left or right), which could disrupt the user’s familiar experience.
