In 2018, we tried bringing a Story Feed to TikTok in China to make it less stressful for users to create content and generate more engagement. The entire project spanned over three months, and I’d like to primarily introduce one of the design proposals, which I think is quite innovative and like a lot personally.

Adding a Story feed on the homepage, next to the For You tab.
Maintain consistency of the layout and interaction.


If a user posts many Stories within a day, the efficiency of the vertical scrolling interaction to switch between individual Stories would be low.

We took a rather bold approach and introduced a tap interaction for switching between different stories from the same user, while swiping up and down is used to switch between different users.

Swipe the avatars to switch between users efficiently

Swiping up and down on the user avatars opens up a comprehensive user list, allowing users to easily access their friends' content by tapping on the avatars
